The OTE Museum of Telecommunications, one of a kind in Greece, opened up to the public in 1990. It is housed in a 1000 m2 privately owned OTE building, in the district of New Kifisia (Athens), where the visitor can find the permanent exhibition hall, a projection room, a lecture hall a library and a laboratory. The purpose of the Museum is the research, study and documentation of historical data pertaining to the evolution of telecommunications from ancient times to the present day, as well as the collection, preservation and display of remarkable collections dedicated to this significant sector of technology.
Through daily-guided tours, it acts as an additional source of knowledge and information on telecommunications to all students, who visit it.
The Museum is a member of The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (T.I.C.C.I.H.).
WHAT TO SEE
The Museum's impressive collection includes original exhibits or casts, telegraphs, pre-paid cards, photographs, telephotographs, telephone books, documents and other telecommunications material.
The exhibition comprises unique thematic areas, in terms of, both, its range and its significance.
PERIOD BEFORE THE INVENTION OF ELECTRICITY
Means of communication in ancient times, in particular, used by Ancient Greeks (fryctoriae, hydraulic telegraph of Aeneas Tacticus, visual telegraph of Cleoxenos and Democlitos etc.)
PERIOD AFTER THE INVENTION OF ELECTRICITY
Telegraphy, telephony, measuring and surveying instruments, wire-wireless-satellite communication, conventional exchanges in operation, television studios and state-of-the-art OTE Group products and services.
EXHIBITIONS-EVENTS
The Museum of Telecommunications organizes exhibitions in the Greek periphery and participates in European conferences organized by telecommunications and postal museums. (www.cecomm.de)
