PRESS RELEASE
OTE & BENAKI MUSEUM - “DIGITALISING” THE WEALTH OF GREEK CULTURE

Technology in the service of art & culture

OTE “transfers’ the cultural heritage and artistic production of our country to the wider public by supporting Benaki Museum since 2006 and contributing to highlighting the complexity of its various collections and archives. In the context of its “Building Ties” Corporate Responsibility Programme and specifically the “Building ties...In Society” field, OTE supports the project of digital documentation of thousands of different objects, which belong to the Museum.

Rare manuscripts, Byzantine works of art, paintings and sculptures, negatives of old photographs and architectural designs, obtain a new digital “status”, are presented through the Benaki Museum website www.benaki.gr and displayed in special periodical exhibitions in Greece and abroad. The cooperation with OTE ensures the uninterrupted continuation of the project of digital documentation & presentation, which is an endless project, as the Benaki Museum’s collections and archives are constantly enriched.

The digitisation of the collections, that a museum possesses, is very significant. It creates numerous possibilities of managing its information, exceeding by far the conventional way of managing and highlighting one’s cultural property. Moreover, it facilitates their documentation (record of possession, description, chronology, preservation and assurance, etc.) gives a significant boost to their promotion and utilisation for educational and investigatory purposes, as well as their global recognition, through cooperation with similar institutions and organisations.

Commenting on the cooperation with OTE, Mr. A. Delivorias, Director of Benaki Museum, stated that: ‘’the history of Hellenism through time can be expressed in many different and enchanting ways, presupposing that there is deep knowledge of the primary material, based on scientific documentation and digitisation. For this purpose, large businesses, such as OTE, comprise an important partner and valuable ally, decisively contributing to the dissemination of cultural heritage for the benefit of the citizens.

From her side, Mrs Deppie Tzimea, OTE Corporate Communications Director, commented:OTE’s long-standing cooperation with Benaki Museum comprises a significant part of our Corporate Responsibility Programme. An enterprise, such as OTE, main features of which are technology and communication, could not but support an effort to disseminate the wealth of our cultural heritage to the wider public”.
